A second GAIA case study presents how the solution integrates farm telemetry, external data, AI recommendations, digital-twin visualisation and controlled data sharing through Farmtopia-aligned components.
GAIA has completed a technical case study focused on the digital solution and its integration with Farmtopia reusable components. The case study presents how GAIA moved from a prototype architecture to an operational Farmtopia-aligned Agricultural Digital Solution deployed at the GGS almond plantation in Salamanca, Spain.
Many digital farming solutions remain isolated. Farm data may be stored in different platforms, exposed through incompatible interfaces or locked into proprietary systems. For small and medium-sized farms, this creates barriers to adoption, increases integration costs and makes it harder for farmers, advisors and cooperatives to reuse data in a controlled and practical way.
GAIA was designed to avoid this problem. From the start of the project, the solution followed a reuse-first and interoperability-oriented approach aligned with Farmtopia reusable software components. The objective was to create a digital workflow that supports the almond pilot while also providing a replicable integration pattern for other farms and agricultural digital solutions.
The case study focuses on three main Farmtopia integration areas.
First, GAIA aligns farm records and operational traceability with the Digital Field Book logic. Farm entities, parcel or zone references, sensor assets, observations and irrigation-relevant records are structured so that field data and decision-support outputs can be interpreted consistently.
Second, GAIA uses Data Integration logic to combine on-farm telemetry with external datasets such as weather information and Earth Observation indicators. These data sources support the dashboard, field-monitoring view, digital twin and AI recommendation workflow.
Third, GAIA applies a Data Exchange-compatible approach for controlled sharing of selected outputs. Observation summaries, recommendation outputs and KPI-relevant data can be structured for authorised access, while farm-level operational data remain protected and subject to controlled use.
The GAIA architecture combines a low-footprint farm-side layer with cloud-supported services. Field sensors provide local telemetry. External services provide environmental and satellite-derived context. AI models generate advisory outputs. The dashboard, field view, digital twin and conversational interface make the information accessible to the farmer.
The technical case study also highlights the importance of diagnostic and monitoring tools. GAIA includes configuration screens, service-health views, integration logs and API documentation. These elements make integration behaviour visible and support troubleshooting, maintainability and future replication.
A key lesson is that interoperability must be treated as an architectural requirement from the beginning. Stable identifiers, data mappings, JSON-LD-compatible structures, REST-style APIs, OpenAPI documentation, secure communication and controlled data-sharing principles all contribute to reducing the risk of new data silos.
The case study also shows that technical integration must remain connected to practical farm use. The purpose of Farmtopia alignment is not only to demonstrate compliance with a technical framework. It is to help the farmer, advisor or technology provider work with better-organised, more reusable and more trustworthy data.
GAIA’s integration pathway is relevant for other ADS providers, farm advisors, cooperatives and AKIS actors. It shows how local telemetry, external data, AI recommendations and controlled sharing can be combined into a digital farming architecture that remains modular and suitable for small and medium-sized farms.
The final project phase will consolidate the technical documentation, stakeholder evidence, dissemination material and replication package, using GAIA as a reference case for Farmtopia-aligned digital farming solutions.
