PROJECT OVERVIEW

AIM addressed a practical utility problem: power lines, water mains and data conduits are difficult to locate and service accurately in the field. The project combined centimetre-level positioning, augmented reality and hands-free interaction in one headset-ready application for infrastructure operations.

Using the SERMAS toolkit, AIM demonstrated how a secure browser-based interface can present asset maps, instructions and documentation directly in the technician’s field of view.

Operational challenge

Utility crews need reliable access to buried-asset information while working in streets, substations and rural infrastructure environments. Conventional drawings, handheld devices and imprecise positioning interrupt the workflow and increase the risk of locating the wrong asset.

Engineering approach

AIM used browser-based holographic overlays rendered in a secure WebView on lightweight smart glasses. Natural-language interaction supported hands-free commands, while GNSS-RTK and Galileo OSNMA provided the positioning integrity required to align virtual cables and pipes with their physical location.

Results and legacy

The demonstrator supported buried low-voltage cable location, irrigation-line avoidance and equipment-document retrieval. A single HTML5 and JavaScript codebase enabled rapid deployment to compatible Android-XR devices, straightforward updates and an open route for utility-specific extension without proprietary interface lock-in.
