Cognitive Cloud Computing for Sustainable Almond Farming
A practical decision-support workflow integrating sensors, weather, Earth observation and AI for more efficient farming.Open project repository↗PROJECT OVERVIEW
GAIA was a 12-month Farmtopia pilot developed at the GGS almond plantation in Salamanca, Spain. It brought farm sensors, weather information, Copernicus Earth observation, AI recommendations and geospatial context into one operational decision-support workflow.
The project treated farmer judgement as the final authority. Its purpose was to organise fragmented evidence, make recommendations explainable and help the farmer review field conditions before deciding whether to act, adjust or override the advice.
FROM NEED TO RESULT
Operational challenge
Almond production faces water pressure, rising operational costs and fragmented information. Soil probes, weather services, satellite observations and farm records often remain separated, making daily irrigation and field-management decisions unnecessarily difficult.
Engineering approach
Xilbi implemented a reuse-first, modular edge-cloud architecture aligned with Farmtopia reusable components. The system connected on-farm telemetry with external data, structured field records, generated human-readable recommendations and exposed the evidence through dashboards, a geospatial field view and a digital twin.
Results and legacy
GAIA progressed from prototype architecture to a Farmtopia-aligned Agricultural Digital Solution demonstrated in the operational context of the GGS plantation. The work produced an irrigation-oriented decision workflow, explainable recommendation cards, service-health and integration tools, documented APIs, farmer feedback and a replication pathway for comparable farms and regions.
